Music Makers has been running courses for over 10 years now and many, many students (and most of the staff!) have returned year after year which reassures us that the courses are working as an enjoyable and rewarding musical and social venture for all concerned.

Young musicians from the age of 5 to 18 work alongside, and are guided by, a team of experienced and dedicated music staff. Their aim is to share their enthusiasm for making and performing music, in a stimulating and friendly environment, whilst ensuring that each student fulfils their potential in the time available.

The courses are run on a three-tier system:

Juniors age 5 - 6

Intermediates age 7 -10

Seniors age 8 - 18 (Grades 2 to 8+)

JUNIORS Age 5 - 6

10am to 4pm

This course is suitable for children with no previous musical experience as well as those who are learning to play an instrument. A mixture of singing, recorder playing, group instrumental work and percussion combined with listening, composing and performing helps to develop aural and rhythmic awareness. Each day a different family of instruments will visit from the Senior course, giving the children a chance to learn about and hear the instruments of the orchestra. The emphasis is on fun, with music related games and activities helping to stimulate an interest in instrumental music making. There will be a concert featuring some of the week's work at 3pm on the final day.

INTERMEDIATES Age 7 - 10

10am to 4pm

This course is suitable for young instrumentalists in their first years of playing as well as children who have not yet started an orchestral instrument. A variety of musical activities will include instrumental work in groups, singing, recorder playing and percussion featuring a wide range of styles from classical to jazz. The reading of musical notation, aural and rhythmic awareness and performing arts skills will all be developed in an enjoyable way during the week. There will also be demonstrations of orchestral and band instruments for those who have not yet chosen their future instrument. The Intermediates will perform a selection of the week's work in a concert at 3pm on the final day.

SENIORS Age 8 - 18

Wimbledon: 10am to 4pm

Fordingbridge: 10am to 5pm - with residential option

This course is suitable for players of orchestral and band instruments (Grades 2 to 8+), who will be placed in groups according to ability. The daily programme will vary but rehearsals will involve a variety of groups including:

  • BRASS AND WIND ENSEMBLES
  • STRING ORCHESTRAS
  • WIND BANDS
  • JAZZ GROUPS
  • IMPROVISATION WORKSHOPS
  • CHAMBER GROUPS
  • SECTIONAL REHEARSALS
  • FULL ORCHESTRAS

The least experienced will receive any extra help required and the more advanced players will be given the opportunity to try more demanding music. The music rehearsed will be presented in a concert at 7pm on the final day. There will also be a chance for course members to perform a solo in front of a friendly audience during the week.

The Senior course is NOT suitable for beginners, harpists, pianists, guitarists or recorder players. A minimum standard of Grade 2 is necessary to benefit from this course.

On the Fordingbridge course the Seniors are split into two weeks according to ability:
Week 1 - Grades 2 to 6
Week 2 - Grades 6 to 8+

There is a residential option for Seniors on the Fordingbridge course.

Residents arrive on the evening before the course begins and will stay in dormitory style accommodation with all meals provided. There is a packed programme of social, musical and sporting activities available during the evenings as well as a heated outdoor swimming pool.

Activities include:

Choir rehearsals, rounders, swimming, unihoc, wide games, informal concerts, a talent show, football, a karaoke evening, water polo, discos, waterbomb volleyball, film nights and tennis.

The courses take place at Forres Sandle Manor school in Fordingbridge, Hampshire, set in 35 spacious acres of grounds and playing fields in a naturally beautiful area on the edge of the New Forest.

'Excellent tuition, high performance standards and the kids have an absolute ball! The ideal combination. I highly recommend this course.'

'My son had a wonderful time on your course, surrounded by friends, music and fun and the final concert was incredible, his music teacher can't believe what you managed to fit into it!'

'Music was never that much fun when I was young!'

I have discovered that I really like playing in an orchestra and I made so many new friends. I am going to practise like mad so that I am a much better player when I come next year.'

'Thank you for a very funny and fabulous time. I loved the jazz group and I think I am a much better musician for attending your course.'
